Staff Gems - Khoa Lam

In the last of the staff gems we’ve featured mountain bikers, but at HLC we have cyclists of all stripes. Based in Coquitlam, BC and representing the roadies of the HLC Canada team, we have Khoa Lam. As with many cyclists, the motivation driving Khoa has changed through the years as life has shifted around but still centers around being able to get out and pedal as much as possible. While not racing anymore, it doesn’t mean that Khoa always wants to take it easy and enjoys pushing the pace when he gets the chance. A good mix of solo and group riding means there’s always a bit of variety to his rides, especially given his location in the lower mainland providing all kinds of routes and options. One of the main highlights of his season is getting a large group to go into the US and tackle Mt Baker, in Washington, a monstrous 38.5km climb, with views on a clear day that can stretch all the way down to Northern California. Below is a selection of some of Khoa’s favorites and most used products from the HLC Catalogue

Tacx Neo 2t - Look, no one likes being cold. While the lower mainland may not have the punishing lows of Ontario and Quebec in the deep of winter, the mix of temperatures hovering around 0 degrees and rain lead to a very cold and uncomfortable combination. As a result, and from a desire of not wanting to start at zero every spring, the Tacx Neo 2t is a tool to keep pedaling through the winter. Don’t be fooled however, on the right day Khoa will definitely be seen pedaling outside

Abus Gamechanger - “Some days I want just the extra watts” No argument on our end for that, the aero offering from Abus can be seen on the head of World Champions and Green Sprint Jersey winners at the Tour. If those guys can get some extra speed from their helmet, then you can definitely benefit as well. It helps that ABUS’ legendary comfort and ventilation system are mainstays within this helmet

Abus Combiflex TravelGuard Lock Road biking and coffee stops go together like peanut butter and jelly, but no one likes the insecurity of leaving their bike unattended while they order their drinks and snacks. Enter the Combiflex lock. Small and packable enough to fit into a jersey pocket, it is the best option for when you need to pop in quickly and have some peace of mind. While it's not a long-term locking solution, it stops someone from just walking away with your bike and leaving you stranded.

Cateye Amp 500/ViZ 150 ComboBeing seen is always important out on the road. With more and more research coming out that drivers and motorists' eyes catch onto lights more so than clothing, running a daytime light has become a critical safety factor, especially for Khoa who likes his solo rides. With a light combo, having a red light flashing away means he is more easily seen when out enjoying himself on the road.
